HEALTHY SAILING scoping search inventories

Under the framework of HEALTHY SAILING Task 3.2.1 (Foundation Report), a scoping review was conducted in February 2023 searching PubMed and Scopus databases, as well as grey literature (World Health Organization, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, international organizations, industry associations and EU/EEA Member State public health/maritime transport agencies). The aim of the search was to produce an inventory of published documents related to mechanisms facilitating infection spread on board large passenger ships, and to better understand the effectiveness of prevention, mitigation and management measures implemented.

Results of this scoping search have been collated into two searchable inventories accessible to the project partners, as a resource to support development of future HEALTHY SAILING deliverables.

The scoping search was divided in two topics to answer the following research questions:

TOPIC A: What is the published scientific literature, regulations, guidelines and policies in regards to infectious disease prevention, mitigation and management (PMM) in large passenger ships and at ports?

The search for Topic A included: any English language article/report/guideline/legislation/other document published in peer-reviewed journals, or by international/regional/national organizations, or the passenger shipping industry, or personal communication from January 1990 to February 2023. Records must have addressed issues about infectious disease prevention, mitigation and management in human travellers, linked to travelling with large passenger ships or linked to a seaport, worldwide.

TOPIC B: What is the published scientific literature, regulations, guidelines and policies in regards to medical operations in expedition vessels?

The search for Topic B included: any type of English language article/report/guideline/legislation/other document published in peer-reviewed journals or by international/regional/national organizations, industry or personal communication in English language from January 1969 to February 2023. The record must have reported experiences, challenges, practices, guidelines, requirements, plans, structures or procedures related to medical operations among travellers of expedition vessels, worldwide.
